Blast from the Past

Standard

Since it is the very first day of the 2014 year, I thought I would start it off by doing the 4 all time favorite books of last year (it was incredibly hard to a) pick just four and b) actually put them in order from greatest to least, since I love them all). These are four of the best books/series (otherwise there would only be one series) that I had the pleasure of reading last year. Hope ya enjoy!

1) The Divergent Trilogy

untitled Honestly, it really isn’t much of a surprise, I lived and breathed Divergent for a whole two days before crashing back to the harsh reality of the real world. This series changed my life and I love love love it. Divergent is an extremely well written trilogy that leaves you crying, but satisfied none the less.

Divergent:

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Insurgent:

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris’s initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

Allegiant:

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

2) The Lux Series

12578077onyx-cover (2)Opal CoveruntitledJennifer L. Armentrout weaves a story so complex and out of this world, you’ll be dying for more. Her novels, centered around super hot aliens that find shelter in Earth, and a nosy, inquisitive neighbor is spell binding and fantastical. This is such a good read, and so different from other YA paranormal romances out there, that I was relieved that it was such a good book (it would have sucked if it sucked.)

Obsidian:

Virginia right before her senior year, she’d pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up…until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It’s hate at first sight,  but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.  The hot guy next door? Well, he’s an alien. Turns out that Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities and Katy is caught in the crosshairs. Daemon’s touch has lit her up like the Vegas Strip and the only way she’s getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until her alien mojo fades.  That is if she doesn’t kill him first.

Onyx:

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Opal:

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable.  The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

Origin:

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.  But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on? And will they even be together?

Opposition:

Opposition is going to be the fifth and (sadly) the last installment to the Lux series. It is expected to be published on August 5, 2014

3) The Divisa Series

81-myijOweL__SL1500_18625005chasing angelThe Divisa series is a series written about half demons. It’s a super good book, even though some things may seem similar to the Lux series (the situation, set up of the beginning) it’s still its own book and series and still worth a read in my opinion.

Saving Angel:

I wondered what my life would be like if we had never moved to the ho-dunk town of Spring Valley, Illinois. Sure the internet service was splotchy, there was nothing but miles of wheat fields, and I probably wouldn’t be faced with death at every corner.

My only neighbor in this god forsaken town was…well there really was only one to describe him, hot as hell. With his sinful dark looks, unusually silver eyes, and kissable lips, there was something about him that was more than meets the eye.

Of course I was determined to find out.

Chase Winters might be drool-worthy, but he was also insufferable, arrogant and…in short a d-bag. Our relationship was anything but love at first sight. Not even close. There was something weird about the family living next door.

What I hadn’t expected to find was an underworld of trouble.
Chase and his cousins Lexi and Travis are Divisa, half-demon, half-human. Getting them angry was hardly in my best interest, not if I wanted to live.

Hunting Angel:

But he was also the lifeline of my heart and soul. Literally.

Things are steaming up between us, and between the sheets. When his lips weren’t locked with mine, they were spewing verbal crap. Half the time I don’t know whether to kiss him or slap him. Our bond was more than just being connected, we are soulbound. The closer we get, the stronger the bond takes hold and now-a-days it seemed we are inseparable.

There was a new addition to our little town, one that has all the Divisa’s on guard – a hunter has taken up residency. This hunter was not just another threat, not when their identity hit a little close to home. Strife divides my neighbor’s household surrounding this supposed enemy. Could they be friend or foe?

Chase’s number one priority in all this as always, was to keep me safe.

Regardless of what Chase says, I am not the weak and fragile human they all think I am. And there was nothing I wouldn’t do to keep Chase from harm. He might drive me up a freaking wall, but he was my pain in the ass. I wasn’t about to sit back and let some hunter fire an arrow through his heart. Not if I could help it.

Then there was the one question that was on everyone’s mind: Will the hunter kill us or save us…

Chasing Angel:

HOLY CRAP GUYS ITS GOING TO BE RELEASED IN TWO DAYS ON  JANUARY 3, 2014!!! You may al expect a review promptly on the 4th (on the 5th latest)

4) Carter Reed

18221931Carter Reed was a book I bought on a whim, not really thinking that I would like it, but I fell in love with it immediately. From broken relationships to hidden secrets and loves from the past, and even the mob and mafia interference. Carter will do anything to save the girl he has always loved…after all, its why he is the way he is. Must read!!

Carter Reed:

Emma decided to skip the gym and went home early. It was the last easy decision she made because she found her roommate being raped by the boyfriend. She had two choices. Call the cops and be killed by his family’s mafia connections or kill him first and hope to survive. There was no choice to her. She killed the bastard first and went to the one person who could protect her. Carter Reed. He’s a weapon for the rivaling mafia family, but he’s also Emma’s secret. Not only was he best friends with her brother, but she’s the reason he became that weapon in the first place.

Awesome Author Monday

Standard

veronica rothThis week’s Awesome Author Monday is….Veronica Roth! Veronica Roth is most known for the popular Divergent series which was fist released on April 25, 2011 with the last book, Allegiance, being released on October 22. 2013. The trilogy is being made into movies and Divergent will be in theatres on March 21, 2014 (insert hyperventilating fangirl moment here).

Roth is best known for her trilogy of novels: Divergent; its sequel, Insurgent; and Allegiant. It was released on October 22, 2013.

She is the recipient of the Goodreads 2011 Choice Award and the Best of 2012 in the category Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction and also Best Goodreads Author in 2012. Roth wrote her first book, Divergent, while on winter break in her senior year at Northwestern University. Her career took off rapidly with the success of her first novel, with the movie rights sold before she graduated college.

Roth has sold the film rights to the Divergent series to Summit Entertainment. Filming of Divergent, an adaptation of the first book in the series, was started in April 2013.

Veronica Roth wrote four short stories from Tobias Eaton’s point of view. The Transfer is the first of four short stories, which tells some of Tobias’s life prior to Divergent. It was released on September 3, 2013. The second story, to be released December 17, 2013, is titled The Initiate. All four stories will be released February 11, 2014 under the title Four: A Divergent Story Collection unabridged.

Veronica Roth is literally my favorite author right now (even though the trilogy utterly destroyed me. I wasn’t the same for like a week. #thestruggleisreal) She is an AMAZING writer and her books are so deliciously bad you’ll never want to put down, even with the kind of emotional torture that she will put you through.

Allegiant

Standard

allegiantThis isn’t going to be a review, because I reviewed the second one and did a first glimpse at the first, so I’m trying to keep the mystery alive for those who have not read. For those people who are close to finishing it or who are reading it now/about to read it, I have just one thing to say. Read the last few chapters alone. Surround yourself with comfort and wait for the pain to begin. Because as amazing the trilogy is (and I LOVE every book and every piece of it) the last chapters will utterly DESTROY you (especially if you are/were as emotionally invested into everything as I was). You will cry, and scream, and beg for something different, but in the end, it had to be done and I commend Veronica Roth for the perfect ending that left hope and despair. It was the perfect ending to a great trilogy, and I am so sad that I’ve already finished them all (I started yesterday….this series will do that to you). So thank you for the best Trilogy I’ve read so far and for knowing when it was time for the story to end, even though I wish it hadn’t. Even with my nerves and feelings in tatters, this book and trilogy as a whole is a great one, and I wouldn’t change anything about it….even the ending.

Be Brave. Be Strong. Be Dauntless.

Review: Insurgent

Standard

Insurgent is the second installment of the Divergent Series written by Veronica Roth.

insurgentSynopsis:

Review:

Okay, so I wasn’t originally going to read these books, but after doing a teaser about it, I caved and bought all the released books….and they are AHHHMAZING!! For me; this series reminds me of the Hunger Games and Host, if nothing else but because society is sectioned off and those sections a in different job groups and behavioral tendencies, and because being different is dangerous, especially with the government hunting you down.

It’s after initiation, and right when Tris and Four can finally be together and think its safe, their world explodes around them. Friends are enemies and enemies skirt the line between the light and dark. Tris throws herself into her mission, trying to rid herself of guilt, not caring about her life, friends, or the man she has come to love. It takes a near death experience for her to realize how much her life means, but that doesn’t make anything easier. Four is hiding things, Tris is lying to everyone and jumping head first into anything that may make her feel useful, and the further they drift apart, the worse things get. Riddled with guilt, Tris can no longer handle guns after shooting her friend, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to save everyone. Four refuses to tell Tris things, feeling like he’s protecting her from his past as he tries to figure out where his loyalty lies; with the remnants of his faction, or with his mother, leader of the factionless, presumed dead years ago after disappearing, and the women Tris hates and doesn’t trust.

Tri’s and Four’s love for each other speaks for itself, but with each person trying to save the other, they drift apart, both thinking the other person’s way is wrong. But when Tris’s devil-may-care new attitude has her facing her death to save her faction and those she loves, how far will Four go to save the girl he loves, from not only the uprising war, but from herself?

I absolutely LOVED this book, I actually read all three books in about two days…which probably isn’t healthy, but who cares? This is the kind of series that sucks you in and has such a strong hold on you there’s no other option but to read the whole thing. This series is quite your job, forget to feed the pets and kids, and not leave the bed until every last page is read and treasured. I give this a 10 out of 10, and if you haven’t read it yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for, but this is something that demands to be read. I predict this series will be even bigger and better than the Twilight Saga and the Hunger Games Trilogy combined.
